Qatar has set its sights on becoming the pre-eminent regional sporting center in the Gulf and Middle East. Spurred on by the resounding success of the Asian Games in 2006, the country is investing heavily in sporting infrastructure that will enable Qatar to emerge as a unique sporting and leisure destination.

The successful 45-nation Asian Games won Qatar many plaudits and gave it a credible chance to host even larger sports gatherings.
